How to actually use this keyword tool
A keyword list without a strategy is just a document full of words. Here's how to turn this database into a real plan for your firm's website. Four filters, four moves.
- 01
Start with "easy" difficulty
Drag the difficulty slider down to 10. You'll see the keywords most independent firms can rank for inside of three to six months: niche terms like "financial advisor for physicians" and metro terms like "fee-only financial planner [city]." These are your quick wins. Build pages for these first.
- 02
Filter by category
Trying to figure out where to start? Pick a single category: Retirement, Niche clients, Tax and estate, and only chase those keywords. One niche, one focused page, ten supporting keywords. That’s the play.
- 03
Sort by CPC, not volume
The volume column tells you how many people search for a term. The CPC column tells you what advertisers pay for each click. Sort by CPC descending and you'll see which keywords other firms bid on hardest in Google Ads, which usually means those prospects are valuable. "Fee only fiduciary financial planner" draws about 200 searches a month in the US, yet clicks on it cost about $16.
- 04
Map keywords to pages on your site
Each keyword belongs on a specific page. Retirement keywords go on a dedicated retirement planning page. Business-owner keywords on the business-owner page. Cost and fee questions on your fee page. The biggest mistake advisory firms make is trying to rank one homepage for fifty keywords. Build ten focused pages instead, and send each one to compliance before it goes live.
Why this list is different from every other financial advisor keyword list
Most "SEO keywords for financial advisors" lists you'll find online are static blog posts that an agency wrote years ago. They have no search volume. No difficulty scores. No way to filter or sort. They lump high-intent searches like "fee-only financial planner near me" in with student questions about becoming an advisor and give you no way to tell the difference.
Every keyword here has US search volume, keyword difficulty, cost per click, and traffic potential from Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, pulled in October 2026. We started from a hand-built list of what prospects search, then dropped anything under 20 searches a month, anything Ahrefs could not score, and other companies' brand names. No job listings, no exam prep.
What's left is a list advisory firms can use to figure out what to rank for, what to write about, and where to spend their marketing money. That's it. No fluff. No upsell.
